Coming to Egypt without seeing the Pyramids? Unthinkable for many travellers. Good news: from Hurghada, Cairo can be done in a day. The journey is long, but the experience is well worth it.
How long is the drive?
Allow about 450 km and 5 to 6 hours each way. That is why day trips leave at night (pick-up between midnight and 2 am) and return in the evening. You can sleep on the way there.
A typical programme
- Departure from your hotel at night in an air-conditioned vehicle.
- Arrival in Cairo in the morning and visit of the Giza plateau: the three great Pyramids and the Sphinx.
- Buffet lunch.
- Visit of a museum depending on the option.
- Return to Hurghada in the evening.
Bus, mini van or private car: the differences
By bus: the cheapest
The Cairo 1 day by bus (from 60€) runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You travel in a large group with a local guide. The best price to see the Pyramids.
By mini van: the best compromise
The Cairo 1 day mini van (from 80€) is in a small group of about 8 travellers with a guide. More comfort, more time for questions.
By private car: freedom
The Cairo 1 Day Private Car (from 125€) lets you travel only with your family or friends and your guide. Ideal for families or a honeymoon.
Already in Cairo?
The Private Cairo tour departing from Cairo picks you up directly at your hotel in Cairo.
The Grand Egyptian Museum
Located near the Pyramids, the new Grand Museum displays remarkable collections of ancient Egypt. The The New Grand Egyptian Museum Of Cairo trip (from 100€) combines it with the Pyramids and the Sphinx.
Take your time: 3 days in Cairo
To avoid the round trip in one day, the Cairo 3 Days 2 Nights stay covers the Pyramids, the Sphinx, a museum, the Citadel, historic churches and mosques and the Khan el-Khalili market, with nights at a hotel (price shown for 2 people).
Children's prices
On day trips: €15 supplement for ages 0-4, 50% off for ages 5-7, adult price from age 8.
Our tips
- Plan a quiet day afterwards: it is a long day.
- Bring your passport (or at least a photo of it): there are checkpoints on the road.
- Comfortable shoes, a hat and water: the Giza plateau is large and sunny.
- Cash for tips, drinks and optional tickets (inside a pyramid, for example).
The Giza Pyramids in a few words
The Giza plateau gathers the three great pyramids attributed to the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx. The Pyramid of Khufu is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing.
Can you go inside a pyramid?
Yes, some pyramids can be entered with an extra ticket bought on site. The passage is narrow and steep: not recommended for claustrophobic people or those with reduced mobility.
Cairo or Luxor?
Cairo for the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the great museums; Luxor for the temples and tombs. Luxor is closer to Hurghada. If you can, do both a few days apart. See our Luxor guide.
Our view
The mini van is often the best value: a small group and more time to ask questions. For families or a special occasion, the private car really changes the experience.
